Recipient of the 2009 Paul Qayutinnuaq Award For Artist Excellence

This is the first for the Paul Qayutinnuaq Award For Artist Excellence at the Great Northern Arts Festival.  The award was presented by Paul'survived wife, Sue Qayutinnuaq, to Rebecca Frances and myself.  I had the opportunity to sit down and learn a little about Paul, I understand now why there was such a strong energy in receiving the award.

Paul was an amazing and very well respected artist, he was luminary, he was an outstanding citizen, he was a great leader in his own family and in his community; he was a great exemplary to all that had the privilege to get to know him, and he was loved and respected by all.  The artist excellence award could not have been named after a greater role model.

Receiving the Paul Qayutinnuaq Award For Artist Excellence is a great honour, and it is remarkable to me to be acknowledged in such esteem.  I thank Sue and the festival for creating this award.  I thank the Great Northern Arts Festival for having me back again this year and for everything that you have done for me.  I am truly grateful and I look forward to coming back year after year :)  Thank you Paul and thank you Sue for providing such an eminent award and allowing artists like myself to grow.

I am continued to be in awe this world-class festival puts on each year.  It would not be possible without world-class leaders and I am grateful for the most amazing junctures it has provided for artists like myself.  Sincerely, Nakurmiik/Merci/Thank you so much for these experiences and opportunities. Not only is the festival superlative, it is also a total blast!

Canadian Guild of Crafts Exhibit
Montreal, Quebec, Canada

I will be exhibiting my work at the Canadian Guild of Crafts starting June 4th, 2009.  This will be my first exhibit at the Canadian Guild, so this is a real honour for me.  My work will be there for one month as well as other artists that will be exhibiting at the same time.

My theme for this exhibit is about bringing awareness on climate change and global warming.  We have been seeing the effects change so many things for us up north, including threatening the survival of our most magnificent animal, the polar bear.  The polar bear has been a part of us, a part of our stories, legends, myths, and beliefs for our entire exhistence as Inuit.  The polar bear is an animal that has been very important to us, we share the land equally, and a part of us will certainly die if they become extinct.

Please go to my Latest Sculptures page to view sculptures that will be in the exhibit.  I will be putting more up as I complete them, so check back often!
